About

Jeremy Preston, violinist

A Musician of the Orchestra’s Inner Life

Violinist Jeremy Preston holds the Principal Second Violin chair of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and is a tenured member of the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra. He has served as Concertmaster of the Mendocino Music Festival and Associate Concertmaster of the Oakland East Bay Symphony, and spent seven seasons with the North Carolina Symphony. His work has taken him to orchestras across the country and the Bay Area, among them the San Francisco Symphony and New Century Chamber Orchestra.

Chamber music sits at the center of his musical life. A former member of the North Carolina String Quartet, he has appeared regularly with the Mallarmé Chamber Players, the Manning Chamber Players at Peace College, New Music Raleigh, and the Eastern Music Festival Chamber Players, and continues to perform on Bay Area stages.

His principal teachers — trained at the New England Conservatory, Rice University, and the Cleveland Institute of Music — include Marylou Speaker Churchill, Lynn Chang, Kathleen Winkler, Sally Thomas, and William Preucil. He has studied chamber music with Norman Fisher and Claude Frank, as well as members of the Cleveland and Juilliard Quartets.

Off the stage, Preston keeps an active teaching studio at his home in the Castro, where he lives, hikes, and — between seasons — travels as often as he can.

The second violin is the music’s inner voice — the warmth beneath the melody.
